I’d like to see our children and youth actively engaged in movement and deeply thought provoking activities. The time spent on cell phones, computers, video games, and tablets continues to be quite alarming. What are your ideas for our precious young ones?

I worry that our area isnt providing the jobs, doctors, and education of children that keep a family here in Allegany County. We have alot to offer that doesnt translate into tangable things that people can relate to. I dont want my child to have to move away in order to get a good paying job. Does anyone else worry about the same thing?

AHEC West operates the ECHO (Exploring Careers in Health Occupations) program for students between their Freshman and Senior years of high school. It’s…[Read more]

Next week I will share the preliminary results from our Launch Survey, which centers on what matters to the people of Allegany County.
If you haven’t taken the survey yet, please do! It’s very short and takes little time 🙂 -

An important topic was unintentionally missing in the Launch Survey. Services and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities or special needs is very important.
If anyone else feels that this is an important issue please include it in the “other” category in the survey, or share more in the conversation here.

You raise an important topic, a challenge in today’s screen-saturated world. Children who spend excessive time in front of screens, rather than speaking and interacting directly with other human beings, can over time lose language and socialization skills. Day-to-day and hour-to-hour routine human interaction helps toddlers integrate things like…[Read more]
The reality is that “screens” are not going away – ever! But – with that said – there has to be a happy medium, just as in all other aspects of life. Everything in moderation! Electronics are extremely important and valuable to our everyday lives, but they have taken over face to face conversations and interactions that are vital to our health,…[Read more]
