Goal:
Increase community awareness of hepatitis C disease.
Strategy Description:
Hepatitis C (Hep C) is a serious, blood-borne disease that has been under the radar. The CDC estimates 3.5 million people in the United States have hep C and over half don't know it. People can live without symptoms of hep C for years, even decades, while the virus slowly damages their liver. By the time symptoms do appear, liver damage is often advanced. Left untreated, chronic hep C can cause liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer and death. It's the 2nd leading cause for liver transplants. The only way to know if you have hep C is to get a simple blood test. We would like to increase community awareness of the risk factors for hep C, the importance of testing and the availability of treatment through Johns Hopkins Hepatitis Center located in the Allegany County Health Department.
