Worksite Wellness 6 years agoThis past summer and fall the ACHD Wellness Committee encouraged a different employee each week to bring in fruits and herbs to infuse a large container of water each Wednesday. This was a huge success and the Wellness group has decided to keep Wellness Water Wednesday going. This is an easy idea you can introduce in your worksites.

Diseases Spread by Humans, Animals and Insects 6 years agoDuring the week ending November 10th, flu activity across the State slightly increased. Now is a great time to get your Flu Shot. Ask your provider for a flu shot. Many of the pharmacies in Allegany County provide the flu vaccine as well.

Lyme Disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacterium and transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) or deer tick, which must be attached to the skin for at least 24 hours for transmission to occur.
Not every tick bite causes Lyme disease.

School Health Nursing 6 years agoI am so impressed to see the work of the school nurses! Amazing to look at the data visualization tool, and overlay these measures: # medical visits per month versus # students returning to class after the medical visit. And kudos to elementary nurses, who appear to have highest volumes of these types of visits .

STD’s and STI’s: What’s going on down there? 6 years agoI noticed in your uploaded files that we are seeing increases in cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea in Allegany County. Have you noticed any increase in the number of people seeking to be tested? In your experience, what % of people seeking to be tested are having symptoms of disease, and what % is not having any symptoms at all, but are just concerned?

Great questions! I do not believe there has been an increase in any specific population seeking testing. In my experience, about half of the individuals that present to clinic for a routine screening and test positive for chlamydia and/or gonorrhea are not having symptoms.

Diseases Spread by Humans, Animals and Insects 6 years agoThere was a story in the news about a British citizen who just died from rabies. He was on vacation in Morocco and was nipped by a cat. He sought medical care but was not given the vaccine needed to prevent rabies. He died on November 4. It is very rare but still so prevalent in other countries. She thought it was a bug bite and just ignored it but noticed a rash. It wasnt a bull eye rash but she went to have it checked out. The doctor didnt want to do anything!
