Using screening (Pap smears) and cervical cancer vaccine (HPV), Australia might be the first place in the world to eliminate cervical cancer.

I couldn’t help but take note of this article reporting that Australia envisions virtual elimination of cervical cancer within 20 years!
They are using a 2-pronged approach, with screening being one. The second part is prevention through use of the cervical cancer vaccine.

Wow, that is amazing. I just heard a local gynecologist speak last week, and he says he rarely sees cervical cancer anymore, and when he does, it is usually in women who have put off having pap tests for a long time. Just shows that preventative screenings are working, and the HPV vaccine is just one more tool in the toolshed!!

I was thinking it might be good to clarify the distinction between an STD (D for disease) and and STI (I for infection).
A disease is associated with signs or symptoms (in the case of sexually transmitted diseases this can include a discharge, pain with urination, pelvic and abdominal pain, sores, etc).
