I think this is a great new initiative. I applaud the comprehensive, yet individualized approach they recommend. I doubt that physicians alone will be able to supply this higher level of care for the “4th trimester”, but I envision many of these services would be suitable for the whole health care team to participate in. This would include nurses,…[Read more]

  • I understand the EColi from the romaine lettuce contamination was traced to a farm in Santa Barbara county California. It’s very curious how their contaminated irrigation water source (used for all the crops) only resulted in contamination of the romaine, but not other types of lettuce.

Here is what I learned regarding recent suicide statistics after reading the article in your link:
“Most notable is the widening gap between urban and rural Americans. Suicide rates in the most rural counties are now nearly double those in the most urban counties.”
    Rural health requires special attention.

Thanks for posting this. We all think about the larger contributions of overdose and suicide to our reduced life expectancy in the USA, but chronic liver disease is another important factor.

I wonder when or if a Hepatitis C test will become more routinely offered (to those born between 1945-1965). If clinicians begin to recommend it (as the CDC suggests they should) then more people will learn their status. Really amazing to be able to cure it. Thanks for your post.

This is an interesting risk assessment tool! I learned quite a bit by taking it. Thank you for sharing it.

The part of this that is most concerning to me is the possibility that human disease will be transmitted by this tick.
Do you know which counties in Maryland have identified this tick?

This is a good reminder, thanks Lynn

  • I like your measures! What is the reason for the bump in number of medicaid enrollees in July 2018?

    • I made a mistake in entering the data so there was no jump. I do want to talk to Aaron about the steady decline in numbers enrolled in MA and get his thoughts on why. Are more people getting commercial insurance?

Patients and clinicians should know to send stool culture on anyone with bloody diarrhea (a sign of possible E coli infection), and not to reflexively treat with antibiotics, because it can increase the risk of having kidney damage.

Great to see this data, thanks for posting it.
I look forward to watching year round trends for Lyme disease, transmission still possible, but much reduced levels of exposure in the winter.

  • The measures in this action group have been revised. They are now in alignment with the surveys that are given on AlleganySpeaks.com.
The first measure is the total # of people who take a survey on AlleganySpeaks.com per month. Goal set this year at 250.
The second measure is the total # of surveys that have been displayed on AlleganySpeaks.com.…[Read more]

I have seen some life expectancy data by census tract, some of which is surprising. I’d love to map the fast food restaurants by census tract and see if there is any correlation with life expectancy! Anyone else interested?

I am so impressed to see the work of the school nurses! Amazing to look at the data visualization tool, and overlay these measures: # medical visits per month versus # students returning to class after the medical visit. And kudos to elementary nurses, who appear to have highest volumes of these types of visits .

From this article you posted I will just re-post this important quote identifying the need to present facts to worried parents when it comes to vaccinating their children.
“The health concerns that parents have over the risks of vaccination need to be addressed with compassion and with care, but also with facts so that informed decisions can be…[Read more]

Would be interesting to look at these data and carve out categories. I wonder how many deaths were related to alcohol alone, without any other substance.

Wow! This is a powerful image. Congrats to Student Council Leaders on this important initiative!

  • I noticed in your uploaded files that we are seeing increases in cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea in Allegany County. Have you noticed any increase in the number of people seeking to be tested? In your experience, what % of people seeking to be tested are having symptoms of disease, and what % is not having any symptoms at all, but are just concerned?

    • Great questions! I do not believe there has been an increase in any specific population seeking testing. In my experience, about half of the individuals that present to clinic for a routine screening and test positive for chlamydia and/or gonorrhea are not having symptoms.

I hope this site can help folks collaborate more easily. Looks like an action group has been created to keep this particular conversation about resillience going. Find it here: https://alleganyspeaks.com/groups/chrysalis/
