Diseases Spread by Humans, Animals and Insects 6 years agoDuring the week ending November 10th, flu activity across the State slightly increased. Now is a great time to get your Flu Shot. Ask your provider for a flu shot. Many of the pharmacies in Allegany County provide the flu vaccine as well.

Lyme Disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacterium and transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) or deer tick, which must be attached to the skin for at least 24 hours for transmission to occur.
Not every tick bite causes Lyme disease.

Food for Thought 6 years agoI am wondering how many restaurants are inspected by our health department, and at what frequency?

We have about 425 food facilities that are under license. Some are inspected 3 times per year, some 2 times per year, and low priority facilities are inspected every other year.

Diseases Spread by Humans, Animals and Insects 6 years agoThere was a story in the news about a British citizen who just died from rabies. He was on vacation in Morocco and was nipped by a cat. He sought medical care but was not given the vaccine needed to prevent rabies. He died on November 4. It is very rare but still so prevalent in other countries.
