During the week ending November 10th, flu activity across the State slightly increased. Now is a great time to get your Flu Shot. Ask your provider for a flu shot. Many of the pharmacies in Allegany County provide the flu vaccine as well.

Lyme disease

Lyme Disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacterium and transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) or deer tick, which must be attached to the skin for at least 24 hours for transmission to occur.

I am so impressed to see the work of the school nurses! Amazing to look at the data visualization tool, and overlay these measures: # medical visits per month versus # students returning to class after the medical visit. And kudos to elementary nurses, who appear to have highest volumes of these types of visits .

There was a story in the news about a British citizen who just died from rabies. He was on vacation in Morocco and was nipped by a cat. He sought medical care but was not given the vaccine needed to prevent rabies. He died on November 4. It is very rare but still so prevalent in other countries. If your international travel takes you to the developing world outside the US, and if you’re planning to interact with animals, you really should consider getting the rabies vaccine beforehand. A family member went camping in August and a couple days after the trip noticed something on her stomach. She thought it was a bug bite and just ignored it but noticed a rash. With climate change, we are seeing more cases of certain diseases that we didn’t see before, the insects are able to survive and transmit.
