Did you know the standards for high blood pressure have been lowered.
Blood pressure categories in the new guideline are:Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg;
Elevated: Systolic between 120-129 and diastolic less than 80;
Stage 1: Systolic between 130-139 or diastolic between 80-89;
Stage 2: Systolic at least 140 or diastolic at least 90 mm…[Read more]-
Thanks for sharing that information, Lynn! It’s important to get that info out to people, especially since the 120/80 was the “gold standard” for years. I was shocked to hear this at my last physical. Do you know if there is any local data available on the number of newly diagnosed hypertension cases since the update? It would be interesting to…[Read more]

So if I am reading this correctly Lynn, those with “elevated” BPs (systolics >120 but < 130) should have accurate repeat measurement to be certain, and in addition, integrate lifestyle changes so that they do not progress into Stage 1 hypertension or beyond? With lifestyle changes alone, many would be able to get out of the hypertension pipeline.

Did you know that September is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Awareness Month? FAS affects an estimated 40,000 infants each year, according to the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Check out https://www.nofas.org/ for more information on FAS.

Alcohol for adult use is perfectly legal, and accessible. Many enjoy it in limited amounts, and manage to have successful lives. However, when we look at the overall costs to society, alcohol is the substance that costs us the absolute most. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is one way we pay. Women of childbearing age who are actively planning to become…[Read more]

I had the pleasure of speaking to many, many people yesterday at the Appalachian Festival. One gentleman in particular said that he was a nurse in West Virginia (I can’t remember where exactly, sorry) but he said he works with a high uninsured population. He asked what…[Read more]

This just in from Make Healthy Choices Easy…… Did you know too much screen time can cause anxiety & depression, neck & back pain and weight gain? What can you do to reduce your screen time? Talk to us here and on our Make Healthy Choices Easy Facebook page!

You raise an important topic, a challenge in today’s screen-saturated world. Children who spend excessive time in front of screens, rather than speaking and interacting directly with other human beings, can over time lose language and socialization skills. Day-to-day and hour-to-hour routine human interaction helps toddlers integrate things like…[Read more]

The reality is that “screens” are not going away – ever! But – with that said – there has to be a happy medium, just as in all other aspects of life. Everything in moderation! Electronics are extremely important and valuable to our everyday lives, but they have taken over face to face conversations and interactions that are vital to our health,…[Read more]
