The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with public health, agricultural, and academic experts to understand the possible threat posed by the spread of the Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) in several U.S. states since its discovery in 2017, according to today’s M…[Read more]

The part of this that is most concerning to me is the possibility that human disease will be transmitted by this tick.
Do you know which counties in Maryland have identified this tick? -
A National Veterinary Services Laboratory test has confirmed the presence of the Haemaphysalis longicornis tick, also known as the East Asian tick, the longhorned tick, and the bush tick, in Maryland. This is the first confirmed sighting of this tick species in the state. The longhorned tick was found on a white-tailed deer in Washington County…[Read more]

During the week ending November 10th, flu activity across the State slightly increased. Now is a great time to get your Flu Shot. Ask your provider for a flu shot. Many of the pharmacies in Allegany County provide the flu vaccine as well.

There was a story in the news about a British citizen who just died from rabies. He was on vacation in Morocco and was nipped by a cat. He sought medical care but was not given the vaccine needed to prevent rabies. He died on November 4. It is very rare but still so prevalent in other countries. Please seek treatment if you are bitten, licked or…[Read more]

So sad. If your international travel takes you to the developing world outside the US, and if you’re planning to interact with animals, you really should consider getting the rabies vaccine beforehand. Otherwise, be sure to get a travel insurance policy that covers evacuation and medical treatments. These policies will allow you the opportunity to…[Read more]

Hi everyone, This is a great group to start. As we head into the winter months the reports of rabies usually decreases since animals are less active. Allegany County has had a very great year with no reported positive rabies encounters! However, please remember that indoor animals do have the chance to be exposed to rabies through bats getting to…[Read more]
