I was thinking it might be good to clarify the distinction between an STD (D for disease) and and STI (I for infection).
A disease is associated with signs or symptoms (in the case of sexually transmitted diseases this can include a discharge, pain with urination, pelvic and abdominal pain, sores, etc).
The fact is, it is possible (and common) to contract an infection without having signs or symptoms. STI’s are those infections that fall into this category.
If you are in the position to be exposed, even if you do not have symptoms, it is a good idea to be tested.
I really hope parents and health professionals are helping young to understand this. Thanks.
